George Stewart

Our Stewart line is traced to George Stewart. We know precious little of George, his childhood, or his family. The first mention or record we have of him is from when he married.

Notes and stories passed down through the family state that George "came from Scotland."
We do not know if this means he was the immigrant, or whether it just means he was Scottish.

By census readings, George was born between 1775 and 1784. In later years, his children are listed on census records as having a father born in Virginia.

George married DELPHIA PIERCE on August 26, 1808, in Spotsylvania County, Virginia. They were married by the Rev. Samuel B. Wilson.

Delphia was born in August of 1786, in Virginia.

George and Delphia lived in Virginia and then Kentucky. They were the parents of eight children. George died very young, when he was about 40-50 years of age. Delphia never remarried. She raised her own children, who were all under he age of thirteen at the time of George's death, and she raised several of her grandchildren.

GEORGE AND DELPHIA IN VIRGINIA

George and Delphia initially settled in Virginia, as evidenced by the birth places for their eldest children. Elizabeth, Thomas, Lucy, and Mary Stewart are always listed as being born in Virginia.

We believe George and Delphia were still living in Spotsylvania in 1810. We believe the following census reading is George and Delphia. The reading corresponds to George and Delphia; the ages listed here correspond to the known ages for George and Delphia; also, this George Stewart is listed without any children - our George and Delphia's eldest known child was not born until September of 1810.

GEORGE AND DELPHIA MOVE TO KENTUCKY

Sometime between 1810 and 1820, George and Delphia move to Kentucky. By the given birthplaces for daughter Mary Ann and son James Allen, it appears George and Delphia moved sometime between 1817, when daughter Mary Ann was born in Virginia, and 1819, when son James Allen was born in Kentucky.

Family stories hold that George and Delphia first settled in Fayette County, in the Lexington area. They found the land too swampy and unsuitable for farming, however, so they moved on to Mercer County, settling in the area of present day Fallis Run Road and Battlefield Road, north of Perryville.

SLAVE PARKER

The following two documents show that George had a slave named Parker, and that George owned Parker at the time of his death. The family kept Parker in the family until at least 1848.

In January of 1844, George's daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and William May, sold their interest in Parker to Elizabeth's brother, James Allen Stewart, as shown by the following document:

The family apparently hired Parker out in 1847. In January (or June - difficult to read) of 1848, William H. Potts acknowledged receiving $8 from Allen Stewart, said sum of money being the share due George Stewart Jr., as heir of George Stewart and thus partial owner of Parker, for the hire of Parker the previous year. By this time, however, George Jr. was dead, and thus the money was being passed on to George Jr.'s heirs - Mary and Samuel Stewart. William H. Potts as George Jr.'s brother-in-law and apparently acting as administrator of George Jr.'s estate.
